About – The Hartland Bridge is the longest Covered Bridge in the World which is 1282 Ft. Long or 391 Meters or 0.390 Km. Located in New Brunswick, Canada. It Crosses St Jhon River between Hartland and Somerville. They declared Hartland Bridge as a national and provincial historic site. Opening – The Hartland Bridge Company constructed the bridge, which officially opened on July 4th, 1901, coinciding with Independence Day in the United States. The year 2001 marked the 100th anniversary of this historic bridge.
History – The original tender to build the bridge was $27,945. Near the end of construction, the cost rose to $29,421.74. Construction began in 1898, aiming for an official opening on May 14, 1901.. Earlier, the bridge had a toll booth to cover expenses, and it became toll-free by 1906. As life seemed good, a huge fire struck on July 15, 1907. The fire caused significant damage to the bridge, leaving it in a dire state. In December 1921, they completed covering the bridge after significant wear and tear started to show, prompting plans. Additionally, in 1945, they added a pedestrian walkway to the bridge.
NO HEAVY VEHICLES – The Hartland Covered Bridge, declared a National Historic Site on June 23, 1980, and later named a Provincial Historic Site on September 15, 1999, now prohibits heavy vehicles and buses.
